Regarding 2D and 3D Resources:

Credit is ENORMOUSLY appreciated, but not required. That is to say, if you incorporate something, and forget to attribute it, I will not be hunting you down and demanding anything from you. However, I very much hope that you DO remember to tell people where you got this material, as it is a lot of work to create it!

If at all possible, I would love to see whatever it is that you've done that makes use of a resource!

Regarding "The Wanderer's Guide:"

"The Wanderer's Guide" is a free resource for everyone, especially RPG game developers, computer game developers, fiction writers, and film-makers.

If you make use of material from "The Wanderer's Guide," credit is ENORMOUSLY appreciated, but not necessarily required. That is to say, if you incorporate something, and forget to attribute it, I will not be hunting you down and demanding anything from you. However, I very much hope that you DO remember to tell people where you got this material, as it is a lot of work to create it!

If at all possible, I would love to see whatever it is that you've done that makes use of this resource!

Developing free resources is a significant amount of work. If you are willing to donate via PayPal, it certainly makes development easier. [link]

Thanks, and enjoy!

Honesty Part 2, and Help...Please.

Thu Oct 9, 2008, 6:10 PM
Hi Guys,

So, it hasn't quite been a month since I spoke my big piece about "going commercial," and all that jazz.

Well, I want to modify the tune I'm singing.

...and I've been sitting here for five minutes, trying to figure out how to say it best.

First, thanks to all who read the last journal entry, and were very, very supportive. You guys are awesome.

Things have been happening lately that are pushing me ever more towards the realization that I'd rather be helping the community than just chasing dollars. I suck at being commercial. It's not built into my nature.

So here's the deal.

I want to get back into "free stuff." I want to be building models (and other things) that the DA community can use for personal and commercial purposes. I want to keep going with this little universe I'm creating via "The Wanderer's Guide," and have that be available to folks for free as a universe where they can set RPG's, books, movies, whatever.

But!

I need help. I need help from people who understand how there might be some sort of system (even an informal one) to get donations/ sponsorship/ something-I-have-no-preconceived-notions-about for this kind of thing.

I don't know.

Literally.

You tell me.

To paraphrase Col. John Boyd: I'm just a dumb 3D artist. I don't understand all this stuff.

I will say this, because I know this: The portfolio for this is up here in my gallery. I think I have some good work, and some lackluster work that seemed good at the time. "The Wanderer's Guide" does have a framework in place by way of a database back end, and anyone who wants to get a "snapshot" of it is welcome to it. I really want to keep using Vue, but I want to emphasize open-source as well.

...and dang it, I want to be able to work in such a way that my output serves the community (even if just in a little niche sort of way), and also in such a way that the end user is treated as a friend and not a criminal.

Anybody got some ideas? :D

Honesty

Tue Sep 23, 2008, 3:19 PM
Greetings to all!

So, I'm writing this missive because the content I'm posting is about to take a "turn." This isn't anything to get consternated about (hopefully), but I do think that it warrants a sort of status update and explanation.

Everything happens for a reason.

What you folks have been seeing on this page has been me getting back into 3D (and visual art in general) after a very long absence. At first I thought it was just a cool diversion, but it has become more than that.

It's become a secondary calling.

My primary calling is being an audio technician. I love being an audio technician. I get paid to assist in making noises of various SPL levels. If I never had to work again, I would still be an audio technician.

But...

The pay of what I'm doing right now, which is a community outreach project, is both somewhat low, and somewhat fluctuating. It would be easy to just get a regular job, but I need a lot of flexibility if I'm really going to be "walking the walk." It's important to me that my primary calling is dedicated to "service," as much as possible.

(Oh yeah, [link] is where you can find out about the above in more detail.)

So, here's the thing.

In order to supplement my income, I've become a broker at Cornucopia 3D. I sell things for use with the Vue software package. I really recommend Vue. It makes things easy that used to be hard.

Seriously.

At the moment, I plan to be pretty serious about building a (somewhat) cohesive chunk of content that concerns a fictional universe that's kicking around in my brain. I'm sure it will surprise no one that the idea is sci-fi in nature. This seriousness, though, means that other things will be playing second fiddle.

There will probably be no more free 3D models for quite a while.

Now, I'm a big fan of free stuff. Free, open source things are way cool. In fact, if it weren't for free software, I would be pretty crippled myself. Free stuff is a good thing. I applaud it. I wish I could just give everything away for free, and be sponsored to do just that.

But...

At this point in time, I need the cashflow that comes from selling things. My health insurance is going up, my vehicle is getting very close to needing a new timing belt, and my life is just trundling on, as those crazy life things are apt to do.

I'm pretty sure that most folks (if not all) who read this will at least be supportive from a philosophical standpoint. I can fully understand, though, that there's always the chance for someone to be disappointed when things go in a more commercial direction. I know it's happened to me in the past, so I have no ill will towards anyone who just naturally gets bent out of shape when economics start getting a bigger share of the pie.

I feel ya.

I will definitely say that my intention is to keep my prices as reasonable as possible. This isn't about getting rich - this is simply about trying to just get to the next level of seriousness.

I want to thank everyone for their support so far, and thank in advance those who will be willing to support this new direction (even if only from digging the art that comes out of it).

Now then.

If you have some money to spend, you can head on over to E-on and get yourself a "flavor" of Vue. I recommend at least getting Esprit, [link] but Infinite [link] is definitely the "bees knees, daddy 'o."

(Vue 6 is the current version, although 7 is coming..."soon.")

After that, you can head over to my store and see what's happening over there. [link]

Thanks to all of you! Best regards!

I Appear To Have Been Tagged

So...8 things about myself, eh?

1. I'm part Hungarian, part English, and part horse-tradin' barber from Spanish Fork. (That's pronounced "Spaneesh Fark.")

2. I think ground beef is one of the most perfect foods in existence.

3. I believe that the solution to every problem is "more gear."

4. I received schooling, and was also schooled (there's a difference) at the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences.

5. I'm currently pursuing a degree in Information Technology, mostly to just check the box labeled "Bachelor's Degree."

6. I'm Project+ certified, but I can't remember anything of substance about project management anymore (other than not doing anything stupid being a preferable course of action to doing stupid things).

7. I have a tendency to not pass along these "tagging" things.

8. I've got this inkling to live in a small town at some point.

Rfalk Out-Awesomed Even Himself!

So...

I'm currently enjoying three months of subscription to DA, because of the overwhelming niceness of Rfalk.

Besides being an all-around nice dude, Rfalk makes all kinds of super neat spacecraft designs. You should check them out. They are, dare I say it, RAD. Check him out here:
