When it's time to get up close and personal, The Twilight Shadows use this boarding craft.
The business end of this craft (a ship that could either be seen as a super-heavy bomber or very light corvette) is the cut-and-ram prow. The rim of the prow's "mouth" is lined with plasma cutters that sear a neat, circular gouge in the hull of the target vessel. Upon physical contact with the target, the heavily shielded ramming posts drive the weakened hull area inward, allowing the boarding troops to swarm inward through the front hatch.
These boarding shuttles are designed to be mostly self-sufficient in terms of their main mission, but are not suited to run with complete independence. The troop delivery hull is spacious, but the power and flight cabin is cramped - it barely has room for a pilot and co-pilot. The rest of the power and flight cabin is given over to ECM gear and an auxiliary generator for the ramming post shielding. The shielding over the rest of the craft is relatively weak, although light fighters will find these ships to be a tough target; these boarding craft have several turret guns installed. The turret guns are highly effective against light shields and armor, but (gun for gun) don't have the punch to do more than discourage heavier interceptors. The guns can, when used in concert, knock down the shields of a large vessel. However, this use of concentrated firepower requires the pilot to open the craft to unopposed attack from fighters and interceptors.
These boarding ships do carry a handful of torpedoes. These weapons are usually used only as a last resort. They will reliably cripple a fleeing target, but do so by causing heavy damage. If capturing a ship or its contents is the main goal, the damage caused by a direct torpedo hit can be VERY counterproductive.
Boarding shuttles of this type have good linear thrust, but have little in the way of angular agility. They are designed to approach a target at high speed, slam into it, and then allow for either a takeover or smash-and-grab. If the target has any sort of serious fighter screen, these ships must be accompanied by a proper escort.
