Rings by dmaland
Rings
For making planetary rings in 3D software, I mostly use a texture-mapping approach.

Basic Gas Giants by dmaland
Basic Gas Giants
Gas planets can be created procedurally or texturally. It just takes a little doing.

Craters by dmaland
Craters
Using Vue to build planets with large craters isn't the easiest thing in the world, but it is possible.

Hi All.

I feel a bit self-conscious posting this here, because I've let this account "slip" a bit. I'm not nearly as active on DA as I used to be, mostly because other things have chewed up a lot of time.

Even so, I do have this latent desire to carve out some more "visual art" space in my life.

Anyway.

When it all comes down to it, whenever I've done something that I felt was worthwhile, what it all came down to was helping other people create their own art. The whole "commercial success" thing - prints, commissions, etc - has never gone my way. So, instead of pursuing that route some more, I figured I'd take a stab at the "patronage" model. It's only fair to say that I've lumped everything that I do into one campaign, so supporting me means supporting material that's about the musical arts as well as the visual ones. Maybe the tolerating of that is a lot to ask for, or maybe it isn't.

I don't know.

In any case, if you have any interest in supporting my quest to "make it economically viable to create free resources for people," then my campaign is here: www.patreon.com/danielmaland

I really like the "John Berkey-esque" ships in the picture, and also what you've done with the jet trails. I didn't realize it was a scrap - I just figured it was cool in a minimalistic sort of way. :D

I'm currently doing more with Blender because my ancient version of Vue can't handle normal maps. Without that capability, my 3DCoat models look really poor. Blender's "everything available all the time, context be danged!" interface still drives me crazy, but I've learned to live with it. The ability to run unbiased renders on the GPU has done a lot to help me overlook the things I don't like in the program. Now, they just have to make the thing a proper asset browser. And NOT encapsulate individual assets in the .blend format. Geeze...

The cool ships you're seeing lately are projects for Zenoarc. www.facebook.com/zenoarc I'm hoping that the game will get funded so we can actually release the models to the community. We'll see.
